wish me a happy birthday… please

Ok that’s it! 30 years down the drain!

I remember being so excited to reach the big three-0, but in the later years the excitement became an unsurmountable horror. I’m OLD for crying out loud! And taking reference to the NSO figures, being an average Filipino man means I only have 38.72 years left to explore the rest of the world!

Kidding aside. The three decades that I lived to date was a colorful tapestry of stories; the comedy, drama, musical and SciFi episodes and the glory of the most recent decade was a product of love and support from the people around me. I started from the bottom, I was born in a charity ward and my parents could barely afford the hospital fees. But the love that my parents showed me and how from that low point, they worked hard to give me a decent life, is something that inspired and keeps on inspiring me to DREAM.

Just like that melodramatic entrance to this so called LIFE, there are still a lot of unheard stories happening everyday.

Every year the Philippine General Hospital sees an average of 60,000 pediatric patients who are the poorest of the poor.  Of this number, over a thousand are prematures and other critically ill newborns.

They need incubators to provide them heat as any drop in their temperature can possibly cause their death. The PGH lacks incubators and are left to improvising equipment using bulbs as the main source of heat. In the wards, beds are decades-old and are no longer safe for the babies.

These little angels got a special spot in my heart, because I was one of these babies. And this is the first time I will beg for a birthday gift, but I won’t be asking for a top of the line SLR, a new backpack, not even a tempting Holiday to Egypt. I would be more than elated if you will donate any amount to CHILD Foundation. Giving up that pack of cigies, two cans of beer, a trip to the spa and posh restos are simple things you can do to help these kids and their parents by donating.

Keeping the Dream Alive is a fundraising campaign with CHILD Foundation Inc. to generate P1.6M for the purchase of much need medical equipment in the wards, specifically, incubators and pediatric beds. Time is ticking and we only have until the end of October to help these little angels.

These children need your help. Your donation can save not just one, but thousands of lives, the hospital beds and incubators will be used for many years to come.

For us travelers, our journey is continuous and fueled with a dream. But for the babies at PGH, ‘journey’ might not even begin.

Send us your pledges via fliptravels(at)yahoo(dot)com and we promise to send you a special postcard from our next destination as our way of saying thank you!

Happy birthday! However, as someone ready to move into his late 30s, 30 isn’t old!

Fantastic way to celebrate by helping babies. Every year, I do the March for Babies to help raise money for premature babies fighting to survive. With my kids, there was a little bit of a scare before they were born. Everything worked out well but I never forgot what it’s like to do all you can for little ones!
