inside the stockings: Singapore Mint Museum of Toys

Christmas is about presents, gifts, celebrations, love giving and groping someone under the mistletoe. But as adults, we would always go back to the days of our childhood when Christmas was purely fun and happiness. Those times when we don’t have to worry about bills and responsibilities; heart aches and life’s drama or how on earth will we be able to make our budget work for holiday shopping while juggling other expenses to support our ADL’s.
That’s when we just want to wish one thing this Christmas: To go back in …

road inked: stories underneath travelers’ tattoos

A cultural practice, a religious symbol, a mark of a hero, a baptism of fire, and more have characterized the tattoos of the early days (actually, even up to now). Today, this practice has cut across cultures and is borne by different gender, ages, and nationality. Some got it in Miami while in the middle of their Florida Holidays and some got it from a traditional Sak Yant Monk tattooist in a monastery in Laos. As I spend time on the road, I have noticed a huge population of travelers sporting one, if not …

delhi: backpacking tips for first timers

The beauty of Delhi stretches across the extreme ends of all imaginable continua; peace-chaos, eccentric-conventional, aromatic-stinky and the list goes on. It could be the reason why it is a real challenge for experts to put together a definitive guide to this colorful city.
The City’s reputation among outsiders are somewhat unanimous and they see this place as filthy yet an authentic exotic destination. India is a huge subcontinent but this capital city is pretty difficult to ignore. Most Flights to Delhi are coming from the biggest international hubs and that is why the …

suck, squeeze, bang and blow

Men are particularly drawn to fast moving objects, noise polluting sounds and adrenalin rushing hotness–and I just summed-up an overview of what happened in this year’s Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix.
It was a last minute gig when a fellow travel blogger and friend Lloyd shot me a holler that he will be here in Singapore to cover the event. So he tagged me along. I know I’m such a lucky bastard to score a $1,400 worth of event passes. It is the time of the year when the Singapore Land Transportation …

snow flake crusted dream

Are we ready for a winter adventure?
It is almost mid autumn and travel expo’s all over the world have been very busy with their stints in the last couple of weekends. I even noticed that a lot of patients are walking in non stop and asking me for pre trip immunizations and flu shots are selling like pancakes that horrible longchamp tote on end of season sale.
They are all flying soon to Paris, Tokyo, London, New York and even Reykjavik, and I can only cringe of jealousy. But I don’t …

blank

The void that I feel when I walk aimless and uninspired, is the same hollow spot that aches when I’m broken.

After waking up from the warm comforts of my hostel room, I took my jacket and wrapped the layers of clothing to break the cold air sipping-in through my pores.
Alighting at the People’s Park station, I had to push my way through a whole stretch of cafe’s barricading the street before I ride the wave of crowd walking along Nanjing Road. Then I walked towards nowhere…

There will be days in the …

Rong, Ronald and Noodles (Shanghai part 1)

I arrived in Shanghai at noon with a sunshine attenuated by the freezing air and overpowered by the bustling crowd of platform 11. I was carrying my 60 L backpack and my day pack, plus big boxes of Aunt Xi Ling–whom by the way, I met in the preceding 14 hour train ride. Together with Max and Lene, we dumped the duct tape cocooned packages in the trunk of the cab for our motherly train seat mate. Aunt Xi Ling gave me a hug and uttered something in mandarin before …

Shanghai – the old and the new

Shanghai is where China first met the west. Since then, it’s galloped off at a pace that the rest of the world is finding hard to keep up with. This bustling, thriving and ever growing metropolis is at the forefront of technology – the city continues to grow and develop at a rapid rate. Sky high buildings dot the skyline and are some of the city’s most iconic landmarks – along with shopping centres, modern architecture and designer bars and restaurants.
You might be wondering what the attraction is for backpackers …

Rockin’ Sigiriya

We arrived at the Sigiriya Hotel around 10-ish. It was too late to climb and the heat of the equatorial sun will sear us to ash by the time we reach the top of the rock. So we asked the tuktuk driver to fetch us at three past noon. That means we have enough time to lounge by the pool and get into proper business–Lion Lager time!

The first time I saw the Rock of Sigiriya was when I was in high school. It was an old hard bound book in …
